About Dr. Martens
Dr. Martens, also known as Doc Martens or DMs, is a British footwear and clothing brand that has become synonymous with distinctive style and durability. Founded in 1947 by Dr. Klaus Märtens, a German army doctor, the brand was born from Märtens’ need for comfortable post-war recovery footwear. His initial design featured air-cushioned soles, which provided superior comfort compared to traditional leather soles.
In the late 1950s, British shoe manufacturer R. Griggs Group Ltd. acquired the patent rights and anglicized the name to Dr. Martens. The first UK-produced pair, the iconic 1460 boot, rolled off the production line on April 1, 1960. The 1460 model, characterized by its yellow stitching, grooved sole, and heel-loop, remains a best-seller and a cultural icon.
Dr. Martens’ rise to fame can be attributed to its adoption by various subcultures. In the 1960s and 1970s, they were embraced by the working class and then by the skinhead and punk movements. This association with rebellious youth culture cemented their place in fashion history. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the brand continued to be favoured by alternative music scenes, including goth, grunge, and Britpop.
