I’ve been using my Zilch virtual credit card for about five years now and have earned about £250 in Zilch rewards. I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon, as it’s handy for next day deliveries, and also handy to return items (even if they have been used) within 30 days, and I’m a serial returner. Anyhow, I also use my Zilch virtual credit card to pay my energy bills each month.
Some of the popular energy suppliers listed as merchants with Zilch include Octopus Energy, OVO Energy, British Gas, E.ON, EDF Energy and Scottish Power, which means that if you ditch the direct debit and choose to pay monthly or quarterly, you could earn 2 percent in Zilch rewards when you pay your energy bills.
It’s super easy. I’m earning between £2.50 to £3.00 per month with Octopus Energy, which amounts up to £36 in Zilch rewards annually. Better in your pocket than those awful direct debits.
Why I don’t recommend British Gas
Unfortunately, our new property is already linked with British Gas and we’re on the usual high standard tariff, and I’ve recently moved to Octopus Energy. Here is a discount code to save you £50 off your first bill if you fancy changing from British Gas too.

These are the negatives of British Gas as a new customer
- I haven’t been able to sign up online, as apparently they need to ‘invite’ you through an email. Even knowing your account number will not allow you to log in. If you cannot log in, you cannot access the five hours of half price electricity on Sundays.
- Customer service is abysmal. I had one email response to my online query, and never heard anything back for weeks.
- Even at CEO level, there is no acknowledgement of email, and the response time is weeks.
- We are on the highest standard rate, which is not very attractive to keep us on as stable customers.
- Considering they are reading off ‘smart’ meters, they have already charged us for time when we have not lived at the address. Guess these ‘smart’ meters are not so smart after all.
- My neighbour has had other difficulties and greediness with British Gas.
- Customer service is difficult to understand and their phone lines are crackly.
- Email responses are like they treat you like a child, like continuing to mention that you need a smart meter to access the half price electricity, as if I didn’t already know. I had already explained this to them on numerous times. Unless they credit us with the lack of half price electricity that I’ve been unable to access for three months, they can kiss my butt until they’ve credited us and wait just as long as they have made us wait for any bloody response. Even our first bills were sent after two months.
Overall, I do not recommend British Gas.
